The Nigerian Muslim law graduate who sparked controversy for challenging the restriction on use of hijab during call-to-bar ceremonies, Amasa Firdaus, was on Friday, July 10, called to bar in Abuja.

Recall that few months ago, Firdaus was denied entry into the hall for the ceremony which took place at the International Conference Centre Abuja, for refusing to remove her hijab.

She had described the action as “ a violation of her rights” , adding the hijab does not violate the dress code set by the law school, adding that the the restriction was a mere convention “that the British gave to us and we have to stick to it.”

Ogbeta.org had reported last month that the hijab wearing Law graduate, was formally cleared to attend the 'Called to Bar' ceremony in July.

While speaking to a correspondent during her call-to-bar ceremony, she said that she had to challenge the status quo.

“Actually there are no rules preventing us from wearing hijabs. They just call it convention that the British gave to us and we have to stick to it,”

Bashir Ahmaad, the presidential adviser on new media who reacted to the news on Twitter wrote:

"Congratulations BARRISTER Amasa Firdaus who was called to bar today with her Hijab. "That didn’t come so easy, her victory is one of the many good advantages of Social Media. She fought not only for herself but for the generation to come. History will surely be kind to her."
